Illasi’s Castle
Reaching Illasi we can see on the hill the remains of the ancient medieval castle which dominates the village.
It has been a bone of contention for many years, furthermore the famous Montecchis of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet lived in this castle.
The castle was occupied by Ezzelino da Romano, who rebuilt it.
Nowadays this property, which includes the park, the tower and the thick walls of the castle, are owned by the Sagramoso family.
Like every important castle it has its own legend and its ghost Ginevra, the wife of the Lord of the castle, who committed adultery and confessed to her husband, who didn’t forgive her and bricked her up alive.
In the 19th century the Count Pompei, knocking a wall down, discovered Ginevra’s skeleton and her skull is now kept in one of the rooms of Villa Pompei.
